Parida steals show in drawn Ranji match vs Assam

Odisha batsman Rashmi Ranjan Parida stole with a half-century and a century against Assam in their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in a draw on the final day at North-East Frontier Railway Stadium in Guwahati today. Orissa gained five points by taking first-innings lead, while host Assam settled with three.

Riding on an 82 (168b, 10x4) by Parida and an aggressive 90 (113b, 10x4, 2x6) by Robin Morris, Orissa mustered a healthy total of 343 after captain Sanjay Raul won the toss and opted to bat. P Jayachandra (33), Raul (32), Prasanta Mohapatra (29) and BBCC Mohapatra (26) also made useful contributions.

In reply, Assam were bowled out for 270 and conceded a lead of 73 run. Among leading wicket-takers for Orissa, Raul and Shahid Khan bagged three each, while Jayachandra picked up two. In the second innings, Orissa were in a spot of bother, losing four wickets for 60 runs.

But Parida and Jayachandra steered the team out of the troubled waters, stitching together 132 runs for the unfinished fifth-wicket partnership. Parida slammed unbeaten 103 (171b, 12x4, 1x6) while Jayachandra cracked unconquered 50 (117b, 2x4, 1x6).

Orissa declared their second innings at 192 for four to set a target of 266 before the home team to win the match. When the game was suspended after eighth mandatory overs, Assam were struggling at 45 for three in their second innings.
